When I was working on the Palouse Style Shoot: Summer Wedding 2011, I wanted an interesting way to display the color pop of bing cherries on among my simple table setting.
Throughout my Online searches, several versions of doily bowls appeared.
Perfect.
This is a simple project that added a little elegant whimsy to the table.
I used a 99 cent doily I bought at a craft store, but I've since accumulated several more interesting ones from thrift shops and yard sales. I intend to make more.
Doily Bowl
What you need:
- Doily
- Fabric stiffener
- Bowl
- Plastic wrap
- Rubber bands
1.
Find a bowl that fits your doily and/or is the general size of doily bowl you want to make.
Cover the bowl completely in plastic wrap. This will protect it from the fabric stiffener.
2.
Grab your doily and saturate it in fabric stiffener. Don't be a wussy here, you need a lot. Squish out some stress.
3.
Mold the wet doily around the bowl. Flatten out any bumps.
4.
To ensure the doily stays in place, strap a few rubber bands around the outside.
5.
Now wait.
Yep. This is the hard part.
Wait at least 24 hours before taking the bowl off the mold, and I'd wait another day before you put anything of weight in it. This stiffener really hardens the fabric, but it needs ample time to dry, yo.
And a note: The bowl is more decorative, so I wouldn't put more than fruit or chips in it as far as foodstuff goes. And it should be spot washed only.
Enjoy! I think it would be cool to use some fabric strips with this project instead of a doily, too.
And heck, now that I finally have fabric stiffener in the house, maybe I can finally make these.
Remember: more tutorials from the style shoot to come soon!

ReplyDeleteWonderful Idea ~ I can see colorful Christmas Ornaments in a bowl like that.... maybe add a little glitter when it is drying! Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I LOVE it! I will definitely be making one, thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial! thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteooooh THAT'S WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAVING GRANDMA'S DOILIES FOR ALL THESE YEARS! I just KNEW a purpose would show up!
ReplyDeleteAnd as thanks -- let me tell you -- you can make BASKETS out of Palouse grass and husks and straw, pretty much the same way you did this -- only it will require more work and more stiffener. You can use square boxes or shoeboxes for the forms -- and then use them as napkin holders n shit!
(don't go to my blog yet. I haven't worked on it yet)
